I am trying to learn scripting from second life's step by step guide. Well, I can't get the very first code to work, the basic defult that says hello. I select touch after putting the code in and nothing happens. Am I looking in the wrong spot or what's up? I am running Mac, but still shouldn't matter according to the guide.

first thing i think of is do you have the "Running" box at the bottom of the script editing window checked?

can you copy the script and paste it here in the thread?
It's a bit hard to tell whats wrong without seeing the actual code.

The other obvious thing to check is to make sure you're on a parcel that allows you to run scripted objects.

The problem was in fact that I was in an area that didn't allow scripting. I just assumed sandboxes allowed you to script. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately areas that allow you to rez objects AND run scripts are griefed almost instantly, especially when they are sandboxes. The result is a nearly unuseably and usually in-the-process-of-crashing sim . Some of the sandboxes are like this, nobody I know ever uses them to test scripts because the results are highly dependant on the health of the sim.

There are, or at least used to be, sandboxes that allowed scripting.
However, an alternative in many cases is to test the script in an attachment. You can always put on an attachment even in places that don't allow rezzing objects. This won't work if you're dealing with sitting, it will probably be a problem if you're doing movement, but for other purposes, it's fine.
