OK, as we can capture so few keys with llTakeControls, I was wondering about using gestures to issue commands to something but then it occurred to me that gestures have to be activated.
Is there any way to automatically activate gestures say when you sit in a vehicle, or attach an object?

I am not a scripter but I have seen it done before... If you go to blue and ride the pirate ship you will know what I mean...

No, there's unfortunately no way to do this. You're stuck for now. There SHOULD be a "activate gestures" permission though. That'd be a really useful feature. I wonder how hard it'd be to set up. Hmm... methinks some Linden begging (tm) might be in order... Let's begin: Cory, have we told you how brilliant and handsome you are lately? And how awesome LSL is, except for the design decisions you made years ago and now don't like, meaning that we don't either?

If there is no way to do it.. how is it done on the rides in Blue? There use to be several this way, but I think the only one left is the pirate ship..

Uh, isnt a "gesture" just an animation combined with a sound and some text?

From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann Uh, isnt a "gesture" just an animation combined with a sound and some text? The point is Eggy that gestures can be tied to function keys etc. so they are a very quick and easy way of issuing a command to an attachment or vehicle - this means you can basically make one touch commands, more so thn you can with the basic controls you can capture. A gesture can just be a piece of text that is said on a channel, which is how I would use it.

I think best bet is to give them a folder with the gestures in it (llGiveInventoryList I think), and instruct them to drag that folder onto themselves. You could even put a nifty hat or something in there for them to wear while they ride / play etc.

Sensual, you're thinking of animations, not gestures. Yes, a script can cause an avatar to play an animation when it sits on an object. What Moopf is asking is whether or not it's possible to have a script automatically activate a gesture, which is a short file that links to animations and sound files to allow you to play an animation or say something different.
In your inventory, see the Gestures folder and the Animations folder? You can use a gesture to play an animation, but it's not that purpose that Moopf is wanting to use them for. He wants to use them for their chat-substituting properties, so he could make a car that when you sat in it, F2 turned on the afterburner, for instance, then when you stood up, F2 would be whatever it is on your SL client regularly.
Unfortunately for him, the answer is "no". Ama's suggestion is the best workaround, but still heavily relies upon the user, more so than I know _I_ would certainly prefer.

hmm strange... I am not thinking of an animation though... this was way before custom animations came out... if you go to Blue and ride the pirate ship, this is what happens...
You sit on the ride, you say GO to make it move... then every so often it throws yur hands in the air and your mouth opens...
I guess I am just not understanding what he wants to happen then I guess... *shrugs*
*note I haven't slept much, so I probably dunno what the heck I am talking about*

We've been able to animate our avatars since we HAD avatars. "walking" is an animation. Custom animations only let us easily add our own to the mix. I went and checked out the pirate ship, and what it does is play the "jump animation", causing your avatar to throw its hands up in the air. Despite their name, "gestures" aren't inherently related to animations. I have a bunch whose sole function is to catch and fix common typos I make.
