Repeatedly turn it on and off :D

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist. But then I'm not lying!

set up a particle system with a single particle with a long life and a longer spawn rate (e.g. on for 1s off for 1s would have a 1s particle life and a 2s spawn time).

It works a treat, although for longer times than a few seconds something like a timer() would be better.

You don't need most of the particle stuff - set a size (unlikely to change), colour (unlikely to change), the default particle texture works pretty well, set the lifetime and refresh rate and off you go.

This wretched machine is having a go slow, can't have two windows open, so sorry can't post the link, but the LSL wiki and then particles is your friend.

A properly constucted particle generator will create a more "nautural" blinking light like one to alert pilots of a RL radio transmission tower. Ama Omega's ExampleParticleScript would be a good place to start; it would also be much less resource intensive than the simpler suggestion above.

Added:I mean what Eloise said.

I have made a decent flashing light by switching a prim's material between glass and light. I don't have the script right now since I am at work, but I can post it later.

I recommend against material switching as it is "unfriendly" to the sim. The particles Eloise described are handled client-side and are therefore far less "laggy" for everyone.
