all living things (apart from viruses):
Grow Excrete have Sensitivity Reproduce Move use Food produce energy
I was wondering, is it possible to reproduce these things in SL?
An object can easily move, copy itself. I think the sensitivity part would be so it detects if an adjacent sim has scripting and rezzing enabled. I was wondering if you had any ideas for growing, good and excreting (not piles on brown twirly toruses lol)!

I remember someone building self assembling, self replicating, self mutating flowers. He had a feild of them, they lagged the sim.
I think it would be interesting to make an ecosystem.

I ran into a thread from 2 years ago which talked about creating an actual ecosystem within SL. But it appears interest died off. I even managed to track down the group in SL and they aparently disbanned a year ago.
I would love to see examples of simulated ecosystems within SL. Don't know of any currently that exist. I've been trying to track down any sort of construct which simulates life to any extent and it doesn't seem to be very common.

From: Nathan Klein I think someone did. I think they called them GenPrims.... Rhu Altman is working on those. They don't look much like creatures yet, but they do have "DNA" and they can breed with each other.

Jiminy, I've seen all of your listed characteristics in different projects, but haven't seen one project that combined them all. There used to be an A-Life group, but I think it fizzled out before I arrived. I'd be interested in joining a group of like-minded people... Maybe if we all collaborated on one project we could make some really amazing "lifeforms". From: someone I remember someone building self assembling, self replicating, self mutating flowers. He had a feild of them, they lagged the sim.
Yes, those were mine. I've been interested in making simulated life in SL since I first joined. The flower field is gone right now, it required too much maintenance to keep it looking nice -- but anyone who's interested in seeing it in action is free to IM me anytime i'm in-world and I'll demonstrate it.

If you're planning to make some autonomous ecosystem, count me in

Ecological Design Group

Hello, thought I'd pop in and let all you folks know what were doing in JAVA. We have started putting together a simulated ecologcally designed community simulator. This is something like a permaculture farm and so far it features a crop of corn rows.
This is an open source project, and anyone who is interested please come by and say hello. Things have been a little slow since the new year, But with some renewed interest we can get this project rolling. So far we have a working weather system with clouds and rain which will respond to cammands. We plan in joining this with a random weather generator or perhaps piping in real weather conditions from specific areas.
The idea is to create a working simulation of a permaculture farm for research, education, and entertainment. This should run like a sim-game where you decide what crops to grow, what to do with the harvest, how to manage your resources, etc.
Check out the Ecological Design Group in the JAVA sim. There are som,e information notecards you can get there, and if you see a local farmer hanging out, say hello! We would love to have anyone on the team who is interested.
