Inability to put a folder into an object's content is a PITA. I want to augment my dispenser (a networked vendor sans payment) to have an assortment of kits in it, each kit having many items.

If I make a notecard with KitName followed by the list of names of objects in that kit, it will work, but it will be hell to update the content of the dispenser because the items of different kits will be intermixed. Also, two kits would not be able to contain an item of the same name. Yuchh.

I presume that this is an old old problem, and hope folk have a nice simple hack I have missed.

Clue-by-four please.

No problem, no hack. Simply package up your "kits" into a singular object, and place into the contents of the network distribution object. You can nest objects.

Indeed, many vendors use simple "unpackers" or just boxes that you right click and "Open" to retrieve the contents of. Sell the boxes in your vendor, the customer opens the box and receives all the product.
