I'm writng a simple HUD that displays information is reads from a note card - is there any way to change the font and/or size of the display text?

Only if you use textures for your text. You can't control the size or font or style of llSetText().

look into XYText in the wiki library, that will suit your needs.

What you can do is have the hud move closer or farther away from the screen. That will make the float text appear larger or smaller in relation to the HUD elements.
