out there that allows you to WRITE Posters. Like on a blackboard. I want to post signs that will change often but I don't want to have to upload a new sign every day. If this isn't the right Board for this please let me know and I'll move it Thanks for your help... cause I know scripting is hard to do... so let me know.

You have the write board (hehe get it, write) Unfortunately there is no such thing... The closest I personally know of would be XyText. I have often wondered if it would be possible to make an XyShapes type thing ... mixing various "art tools", lines, radials, etc and displaying them kinda the way XyText does on texture faces Alas, It's a tough request --Jack Lambert edit - if it's just going to be text every time, try using XyText or several prims with textures ... not complicated to write. Let me know if that's what you're after and I'll do it

Once they hammer out the functionality of Streaming Video in 1.6 (bit buggy presently in preview), a fun way to do this would be to make the posters in .MOV format, then change the URL itself any time you want to. Furthermore, Quicktime has a neat feature that'll import text, etc, to a movie format. So, my advice would be to load up the preview installer and play around with the options. Note: One movie per parcel.

they say you can use Flash too which might be better just for text. also they want to support other formats in the future. everybody's got their favorite.

From: Lightwave Valkyrie hmmm quicktime thats what they are gona use for streaming? Quicktime is the player format they're using, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the only file format it plays. There's a link from the preview installer for the complete list. And I'm not sure about Flash... I was unable to get .swf files to run last night.

Perhaps they mean FLV files (macromedia flash video) which is a new format introduced recently by Macromedia.

From: Jeffrey Gomez Note: One .MOV per parcel. Finally! A use for all those 16m^2 plot subdivisions.

I was successful at displaying .swf files last night. Also note that good old jpg files can be displayed in this fashion so with a little bit of fancy ImageMagick coding you could make the updating sign....
I know some people have played with actual dynamic pictures.... Christopher Omega did is a cubic hoard of prim picture importer thing (which I am sure you don't want to allocate that many to the poster). I briefly played with utilizing textures with various bit patterns on it to form a display... definately slow as sin and not ready for prime time. There is particle writers, that can dynamically display whatever, however particles have their own issues (allways facing you, limited quantity, etc.)
Best option probably is just to wait for 1.6 though.

I have an idea, but it would use like 1k prims you could use those tiny prims tricks with the dimpling and whatnot, put the in a griud of hellalot of em,make like a pencil u can drag, and when it collides wit h a tiny square, it changes from black to white. Only problem with that is the system resources wou dbe used up in no time. Peaps have sametrhing with a timetr that rezzes a little square or somethinginh every 0.1 secs or something. Able t obe done buts shouldnt.

I tried to make this once. It almost worked actually. My plan was to take a regualr black prim, stretch it nice and big, and then take a little piece of "chalk". And have the chalk "fire" from a chalk gun ^_^. And when the bullet hits the prim, it turns phantom, sleeps for .02 of a second, and turns solid again, so that it gets stuck in the prim. Make the chalk gun an automatic, and you have yourself a high prim blackboard!
