Hi there,

I am a teacher in SL and I want to build a new scripting class series "Examine Scripts" where I will examine and explain scripts that are in the public domain or here in the forum.

I want to do a class for xySetText from Xylor Baysklef but I cannot reach him in world, so maybe he or somebody else can tell me if and where I will get permission to use his script for a free class.

Thanks

Jim

A couple variants of xyText are in the Scripting Library, and associated posts in the scripting library forum thread /54/9c/12156/1.html. Many authors have contributed since Xylor's original; at this point it seems like the concept is pretty much "community property" but surely attribution at least would be appropriate.

(Wants to watch the sim statistics for Images Time when all those alphabets load at the same time... should rival texture lag at a SLingo parlor.)

If I remember correctly, the double character version uses 66 textures but the single character per face version only uses a single texture. So texture lag is dependent upon which version of XYText you are using :)

Jim - have a chat with Ima Mechanique. I know that many moons ago he was working on a much-improved version of XyText.

I'm not sure where it went, but you might ping him about it, and see if he has anything that you may be able to use for your class. :)

Thanks Travis, I have sent Ima an IM and see what she will reply.

If I don't hear from her, I will use the common version that is published here on the forum. I think it's okay then to use it. My main goal is that students understand the underlying principle of texture placement and string manipulation.

Thanks Jim

ima is a dude :)

and maby its just me, but using xy text to show texture and string manipulation is sorta like using a space shuttle to show how a door hinge works

llSetText () and llOwnerSay () might be easier ways to teach string manipulation.

I dont quiet remember off hand who it was, but there was someone that posted a xytext lite version so the forums. He actually assisted me with another project that i had. Im pretty sure that he would not mind providing a script for assistance. This script is very easy to interpret and has full permissions. It would be a great project for an advanced class.

IM me (Cryas Tokhes) in-world and i can give you the script and information on the owner.
