What is a land scanner? And how would it create lag, as many claim? And this should not become another post where people go for and against.

It is a script or group of scripts designed to scan the land in a given sim, usually in blocks of small size, say 16m^2, in order to detect land that has been released to public land, or perhaps land for sale, period.
They are a source of terrible lag because they're usually massively parallel (ie. multiple scripts working in concert), and often configured to scan the entire sim repeatedly at short intervals, to make sure none of this potentially grabbable land slips through undetected.

Though a recently open-sourced land scanner isn't causing as much lag as people are led to believe.
And for what it's worth, they are all pretty much worthless nowadays, since released land as small as 128m is automatically turned over to the Lindens to be put up for auction.

From: Cross Lament or perhaps land for sale, period. This isn't currently possible. A Land scanner can only scan for public land, or perhaps land that has changed hands (but that's a lot more complex). And if coded properly they don't cause noticible lag.

Well, I've seen this stated several times lately, but unfortunately it isn't true in my experience. In fact, I bought a 512m2 plot of land yesterday that had been released to public. As far as I can tell, it still goes public if the person releases it. And from what I've seen, this happens more frequently than one would think.
