Is there a way to get a list of items for sale in an area?

Sure, but not a scripted way. You can walk round and check though.
There used to be a map option for objects, which highlighted objects for sale. Sadly that's gone, although the map is too slow to update for that to be useful these days. _____________________

If you'd like to shop without having to wander, and you'd like to be able to use a text search to shop, you can use SLExchange or SLBoutique. They are websites for sellers to post their items. Just put a .com behind either of those names.
I love shopping without leaving "home", lol. |

I read that sheeplabs search works by a bot that does exactly what I was asking about.
Impossible? Apparently, not. :-/ |

It's not impossible, but you'll also notice that Electric Sheep Co's bot often has outdated information AND sometimes gets incorrect information.
If you wanted to though, yes, you could create a bot that went to each region and scanned for things for sale. The tool's usefulness seems to be quite academic (i.e., not inherently useful) though. _____________________

So, what scripting technique does their bot use? Anyone know?

It doesn't use LSL - it is a client bot, or "homunculus" as I call them. It checks whether things are for sale just like you would, only in an automated fashion and an awful lot faster. It still takes about five minutes to scan a sim apparently.
