What type of load does a particle script put on a server. At first I thought with all the action, you had to be careful using them, but then I realized that the animation should be entirely a client load, not a server load.
Can anyone give me any insight?

Assuming the particle effect is not changed, then all the server needs is the original instruction then after that the script can even be removed. Particle effect is actually a prim property and fully a client-side effect.

Yeah, it shouldn't cause any more problems to a server than specifying a prim's floating text or color.
One thing, I have found that you want to keep your textures fairly low though. 256x256 is probably the upper limit for particle effects, otherwise you just get grey squares.
