I have just been somewhere on mainland where there is a 16sqm hole going down 100m below the surrounding ground level. This is a normal +/-4m terraform sim. I have seen patches of bug pits this deep, but this one is isolated and looks intentional. Can this be done deliberately? With a script?

I'm curious! I can only suppose it's an 'exploit' as going 100m underground just puts you in dark-blue boringness normally. Did it look like the ground went right down the sides of the hole? If so, the ground mesh must have been distorted somehow, mustn't it?
I've been to a couple of establishments that claimed to be built underground, but they were just camera tricks. I have my camera constraints turned off. As a comment of slight relevance, you can place objects underground. Comes in useful sometimes. Cherry _____________________

might have been a legacy sim, that had unusual terraform limits (a few used to have +/-40, and few were +/-100, there used to be a list but I've lost the link), a private sim (estate manages don't have to obey the limits (I think?), or it could be related to this jira issue...
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2959 ETA: I'm guessing the surrounding land the OP was discussing was 100m+ I don't think you can go below the sim floor even using a custom raw file for the sim layout. (but I could be wrong) PSedit: the mentioned list of (mainland) sims with odd terraform limits appears to have been wiped out (was in the knowledge base) the only two I could dig up names for were 'Da Boom' and 'Immaculate' (both +/-40)... there were about 2 dozen... no clue if their odd limits still apply _____________________

I vaguely remember someone a year or two ago mentioning a goofy technique to achieve something like this but wasn't interested enough to remember it.

water at 64m !?!? on a mainland sim? that does seem odd... I thought all LL sims had their water at 20m... odd.

Water on some mountain sims are even higher.
You can go underground with the llSitTarget( <0,0,100>, ZERO_ROTATION); |

Yeah, it's a bug in the terraforming tools. You can set one of the options to a weird value and essentially blow a "hole" or a pillar in your land. Can't fix it without Linden help, or perhaps a sim reboot.
