I purchased the WaveMaker in SL and when I try to upload a sound I created, I get an error message saying "The file does not appear to be a valid RIFF WAV file".

So can someone tell me what the process is for converting either a .wvn (default WaveMaker sound file) or a .wav into the format that can be uploaded to SL...

Thanks :)

If this is an offline editor then there may just be a simple option to Save As... and then choose *.wav as the file type.

Now if you are trying to upload a sound from your computer to SL, then you may want to look at some editors such as WaveLab or Sound Forge. These will help to convert file formats to something that SL could use. It all takes a bit of tweeking so be patient.

This WaveMaker is purchased in SL but is used offline and files stored on PC.

What is the exact format used by SL?

SL needs WAV files.

Apparently SL does a few things with the audio files.

To start - if you want to upload an audio file it needs to be a .wav format.
I believe 44.1, 16 bit is the basic format you want to start with.
When you upload the file you have the choice of the bitrate either individually or if you do a bulk upload it will use the default upload rate in your preferences. The higher the bit rate the higher the quality and the longer it takes to load. The loading aspect seems to mainly be a consideration when first playing the sound. The delay can be considerable the first time and then the sound seems to be available on the client and happens with a lot smaller delay. If you need something that responds immediately you need to make sure you do a call for it - maybe with 0 volume - before you need it. Don't know whether this works for all clients - it may be that each avatar when it comes into the environment will have to wait for that initial delay while the sound gets downloaded to their system.

Apparently - I'm taking their word for it - the WAV file gets converted to OggsVorbis format for the transmission to and from the client (you). I'm not up on this format but since it takes place behind the scenes there's nothing you can do about it except hope its working. Supposedly its a better format for transmission.

I think there are some tools around in the developers resources section - at least something basic that can take a .wmv audio file and convert it to .wav.
