Ability to Record a Virtual Lecture?

Hi,

Our real-world campus features a few Technology Enhanced Classrooms which allow the lecture to be recorded and made available online to attendees. Is it possible to do the same in Second Life?

So far we have a basic classroom built in SL equipped with basic slide presentation technology. Is it possible to record the lectures we give in our virtual classroom (audio and/or video) ?

Thanks for reading. I'd appreciate any relevant resources you can direct me to.

You can use standard screen video capture software to do this. The process is called machinima (machine cinema, I think) and there's a forum devoted to this two slots above this one.

If you aren't already in the SLED mail group, join now. There are over 6,000 educators in SL on the list. Discussion on this topic (and lots of others) is frequent and vigorous. To subscribe, see https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators

Thank you for the quick replies!

I am familiar with the machinima method which uses third-party software to record the onscreen video and audio. This process involves a person installing the necessary recording software and configuring it, and SL, correctly.

What I have in mind is a different approach: creating a prim in our virtual classroom that, when touched by the teacher avatar, automatically begins recording the lecture (audio and video).

At the moment, I don't see how this is technically possible, even on our private grid. But I'll keep searching around in the meantime.

Thanks,

Nick

I don't think it's possible to set up a recording device of the sort you describe for video, audio or voice; I imagine it would require installing custom capture software on the actual Linden sim host.

Recording text chat is simple, but is completely useless for what you need. Recording the actual human lecturer probably isn't much use to you either.

Perhaps this might be a facility that Linden will supply on their forthcoming business grid, about which I know nothing.

if your box is actually an avatar, with a scripted client, then yes, the whole thing could be automated, but there is no inworld rendering of the world, it's all rendered client side.
