How do I adjust the z axis of floating text to bring it closer the the prim that contains it?
Is it possible to have the floating text hovering in front of one face?

This is not something possible via, llSetText. Try using another prim that is 100% invisible and has a different position from your main prim.

You can try rotating the prim a little. Or you can put some space/crlf (not tested) in to raise the text.
But different ppl will see different things depending on screen resolution, etc.

heyas;
actually, if you change the z size of the prim, the hover text will go up and down. if you have the prim turned sideways, it is most noticeable.
if you have the prim turned sideways, the text will write across the middle of the prim. (plus or minus the z scale adjustment.) so if you need EXACT placement, you can get it in the middle of your invisible prim that way. more or less. it depends on how close/far the viewer is too, i think.
fun, huh? ;)

You can add "\n" characters in your text and this will push your text upward 1 line for each "\n". If you want to go downward its more or less messing with prim locations.

Also, adding to blood song you can probably play around with cutting and such to maybe make the prim big so that the text is set in the "middle" which is actually above in the area which you cut.

Space bar works wonders to raise the text (spaces after the text), never had to lower it.

I like the last three work arounds especially /n - it sounds a little clumbsy but should do the trick - The Z dimention alternative is excellent - I tried it - thanks people

hmm...
ive had trouble getting empty spaces to space out set text. \n works, i *think*, but leading/trailing spaces don't work unless you add like a _ or a . at the start/end of them.
or is it \n\n\n. ? with like a dot on the bottom? something like that.
