If you want to help this way can I suggest you put your name on the Scripting Mentors page - I go to bed (being in Europe) before a lot of the US residents get in to SL, but still get queries most days.

Good idea.

I applied to be an SL mentor for building/scripting 6 weeks ago and have heard nothing back from it.

SL Mentors and lsl scripting mentors are two different things. Follow the link I gave you and you can sign yourself up to the lsl scripting mentors list - it's on that page.
