While I am at drilling for info..

Does anyone have any cool creative uses for the teleport app to chat feature that they would like to share?

I am considering using this instead of the basic landmark giver as a means to get around and am curious if there is any way that this can be invoked directly rather than having to be followed in chat history.

again.. Schank You

Don't know that it's especially cool but I use it extensively in my store. Since I never worked out how to create landmarks with openmv it's the only way I can dynamically generate ad boards for my parcels and include teleport links. As far as I can tell people it works well enough and doesn't confuse the newbies.

I don't believe it's possible to force the teleport window to open.

How is that going over with the visitors of the store?

I just put a test one in my store , I am thinking about getting rid of the manual LM giver board that serves as a backup to the regular multi location TP system.

In what way is

* secondlife:///app/teleport/Healy/115/134/250

better or different than

* secondlife://Healy/115/134/250

or even

* http://slurl.com/secondlife/Healy/115/134/250

(for inworld clicks)?

I ask, because your question very specifically questions usage of only app/teleport function.. which I, for one, never use. I prefer the *MUCH* simpler "secondlife://Healy/115/134/250" format.

I've had some use for it, in terms of object IMs. I had a product that was "frequently lost" by people who owned it. While trying to adjust it, they would frequently rez it on the ground, or "drop" the attachment. It became quite a joke on the forums, when some random new user detached a similar item, and left it "lying around" in someone's house.

So, we added a feature so that the product scans for it's owner.. if the owner is not found in scan distance, it checks if the owner is online. If they *are* online, then the object sends them an IM to the effect of "hey, you left me *here*, come get me". The message included a dynamically generated teleport link, to teleport them back to the object's location.

The product isn't no-copy, so in reality, this feature wasn't "super critical".. but the product is customizeable, and the potential did exist that the user might have "dropped" their only copy (or only customized copy). But this "phone home" feature might be very useful in situations where non-furniture objects are no-copy, or if huds (as an example) get dropped.

Don't know, I'll have to check tonight. Have mine setup with app/teleport and this bypasses the map. Click it in chat and you TP direct. As long as the shortened address works the same, I'll correct mine.

you need 3 forward slashes not 2.

2 will open a regular tp window while 3 will instantly tp you.

What are you talking about?

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Healy/115/134/250 - opens "Place Information" window.
secondlife://Healy/115/134/250 - opens "Place Information" window.
secondlife:///Healy/115/134/250 - opens "Place Information" window.
secondlife://app/teleport/Healy/115/134/250 - opens broken "Place Information" window. (region "app", coordinates 0,0,115)
secondlife:///app/teleport/Healy/115/134/250 - instant teleport on click.

Personally, I like that the "place Information" window pops open on the "secondlife://Healy/115/134/250" url.. it lets people know what sort of place they're about to TP to, and make an educated decision about teleporting or not.

I find it very very useful in group chat - use case:
1. you want all group chat members quickly reach the same place
2. you cannot give a landmark to all users logged in group chat at the same time (you should send a notice with an attachment, but sometimes you don't want annoy the whole group with a notice)
3. (wrt previous Winter Ventura's comment) as a group member / officer, you're supposed to be providing a legit destination

note:
As a warning, I usually write "click here to directly teleport" before the secondlife:///app/teleport/.... address.

Here is a Function Stub that would serve
02-14-2009 10:29
// ------------ START OF CODE --------------
// optionally you can preset addresses using variable or
// stuffing into a list
//
SEND_DirectTP()
{
// Gets current location & Sends MSG with Target
// Works across the entire grid. No Map, No LM etc... needed
string TARGET; // create a temp string to keep it tidy
vector mypos = llGetPos(); // Current position.
TARGET = "Direct TP to: secondlife:///app/teleport/"+ // The Required gets assembled
llEscapeURL(llGetRegionName())+ // setup region name into correct format
"/"+(string)llRound(mypos.x)+"/"+ // round off the x vector
(string)llRound(mypos.y)+ // round off the y vector
"/"+(string)llRound(mypos.z)+"/"; // round off the z vector & terminate
//
llSay(0,"Click this for immediate TP. \n"+TARGET);
}
//
default
{
// --- program start ---
touch(integer num)
{
SEND_DirectTP();
}
}
// ------------ END OF CODE ----------------

Notes:
This is a small part of a system I have built but the module will work. What you can do, is make a little box and wear it as a HUD. Go to the point you want to get the info from, click the box and it will dump the info into chat. You could store each location into a variable or list (2 part Strided list works best as part-1 would be NAME you assign to it, part-2 would be the TARGET information).

The advantage of using a strided list, is you could label each point for a menu button which would then correspond to the TARGET.

Hope it helps.

Very nice, WhiteStar. The only tiny change I might suggest is using a touch_start event instead of a touch event to drive it. I get a double bounce when I try the script as it is here. I do like it, though. Thanks. ;)

This was just a quicky sample....

Yes, using a touch_start() & touch_end() is cleaner, also checking for multiple touches from multi-avie's is important if your sending to llInstantMessage. Sending to CHAT is not so sensitive.

Triple-slash doesn't auto-TP for all users. It depends on their environment, particularly their OS.

Using the secondlife:///app/teleport thing seems to be the easiest way to go to any altitude up to MAX_INT (approx. 2 billion meters)

Yep pretty interesting thread. Sharing of minds/brain storming session led to Sgeo trying it with app/teleport:

Do you know of any specific OS / environment where this never works?

sometimes I must click two or three times to get it work - it doesn't work at the first click, sometimes. I'm usually on Linux.
