Is there a script out there that would allow me to have a train in our sim. I know there is the Linden Railroad but I can't seem to find any scripts to enable such a train to run. I would imagine if the Lindens Created it the script should be open source shouldn't it?
Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?
Thanks Dioxide

I think that the script from the Linden Railroad's train would probably be overkill if your only wanting to use it within one region. Also, just because it's Linden run doesn't necessarily mean open source but it doesn't hurt to ask. Research the current Linden Railroad system and try and get in touch with someone in charge. Don't forget to post your findings here.

I don't recall the Linden Railroad running very well, so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that one in particular.
There are several discussions of vehicles in these forums. Trust the Search, Luke, trust the search.
There are different approaches to trains.
One is to use a vehicle that follows some particular route, and then put track down along that root. In Samoa (southwest) there is a Taxi tour that goes from point to point in the sim. If there were track, it would appear to follow it.
Another is to have track that broadcasts its possition to the train, and then the train " follows" the track.
I think a real physical train that runs on eral physical track would probably suffer a lot of derailings...

Yeah I have been looking at the search but just don't find anything that really works yet. There are several monorails in world but I can't find the script for sale or posted anywhere. It seems to me that there should be some sort of standard tried and true method that has been posted on the forums but alas I have found nothing as of yet. Perhaps I am just not using the right terminology? Any script that would allow traveling between multiple points and stopping should work. I found Jeffery Gomez script on the forums but it is not very reliable for some reason. Although he did try and help me out several times even though he did not really support the code. /54/05/30251/1.html

A Few SL Railroad Details

I understand that Michael Linden is in charge of the official Second Life Railroad (SLRR) at this time. You can IM him but do not expect an instantaneous response. He's probably not going to offer any guidance on building and scripting for trains.
I get the impression that many Lindens are busy right now implementing the upgrade to Havok 4 - their other work will be secondary or on hold until that's released and stable.
Apparently the SLRR specifications for guidance, signaling, and control are not publicly available at this time.
My own investigations reveal that in the center of the SLRR track there is an (almost?) invisible prim named 'guide'. Using llSensor and varying the angle and range, one could write a classic PID control-type script to set the near course for a train and move along with that guidance.
Have not checked on crossings or switches, but the last beam at the termination of a track is named 'end'.
Near stations, and probably at switches and track terminations on the SLRR, there are also phantom invisible prims named 'train detector' through which any running train will pass (llVolumeDetect, anyone?). I do not know how all of this interconnects, (a combination of link messages/chat/chat relay?).
There is also the Great Second Life Railway (GSLR), a resident-based effort to lay trackage and run trains. I have not yet contacted the GSLR folks but plan to. The rails of the GSLR had a significant name but I do not remember it. Another notecard needing creation.
From my cursory examination of the tracks in the Caledon regions, the trains and trams there seem to be of the set-course type, not the track-sensing type.
I would be interested in any SLRR, GSLR, Caledon rail, monorail, and any other guided mass-transit-oriented group, so if others know of such I'd appreciate a vector to same. (Search was inconclusive)

The trains and trams in Caledon do indeed follow set patterns (my trams are notecard-configurable, I am not sure about the trains as I did not build those) since (a) there is rarely if ever a need to change their course and (b) they must occasionally turn over other people's property anyway, where one cannot leave track markers.

search for Kitto Flora, he has a fine train product and I have nothing to gain by saying this, but have had two of his trains for the last year and have been impressed by kitto's dedication to his product. You can always come by Fhelzgud in Sammamish and see mine up & running on ground level.

I agree with Ray...Kitto's trains are excellent. The train adjusts its behavior based on the lag in the sim and does a great job of helping itself in rare cases that it gets stuck or derailed.
Laying track is really easy and options like switches make the route more interesting.
I ran my train for a long time without any problems - I took out of service for now since I am replanning the route.
These trains are great value for the L$ since creating a set like this would likely cost you more in time than it does L$.
Kitto also (recently?) released a monorail that can travel between regions - if it is anything like the train, it should be equally good.
Kitto has demos of the train and monorail and you'll find a number of train sets at various places in SL.

Well the monorail is not too bad but its no mod and copy so I cant make it fit the subway in the city.
The price is great for what it is but unfortunately thats of less help in this case since a monorail in the subway just looks a bit silly.
