Hello

I need to know the maximum length a region's name can be - but cannot find this information in the obvious places - the forums here, SL Limits web pages, LSL Portal & LSL Wiki and web search.

Thank you in advance

http://www.lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=simulator says, "Simulator names are restricted to 20 characters(counting spaces) which may be split into 3 alphanumeric words," but must be outdated or just wrong. "Sandbox Island Extension" is 24 characters.

Thank you Hewee for such a fast response.

Even though the 20 char and 24 char conflict - it seems to suggest a limit to it. I thought there might be a limit of 255 or something very large.

I'll just use 48 as a safe margin and hope its in bounds.

This is getting more uncertain - i'll now wait a while and see if anything higher than 33 turns up - thank you though :)

Perhaps a Support Ticket is the way go for a definitive answer.

ADDED
I've now just submitted a ticket about the Knowledge Base not including this - if an answer comes back I'll post it here.

According to https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=5215 (Guidelines for Private Region Naming),
From: someone
Private Region or Estate names:
  1. Must not already be in use
  2. Must be more than 3, but less than 25 characters (spaces count)
  3. Must contain three words or less
  4. Must use only alphanumeric characters (no punctuation)
  5. Must not be the name of a real life city (however, "New York Island" or "Los Angeles City" are fine)
  6. Cannot include SL, Linden, Linden Lab, Second Life etc in the name
  7. Must be PG
The Combat sandboxes are, I think, mainland, so it may well be that different rules apply there.

Actually I think the difference you are seeing is the difference between what Lindens can name a region and what a user can name a region. Anyone have an example of a user generated name that falls outside the guidelines?

Sadly nearly all these rules are broken. Commas are frequenly included, as are dashes. (so much for no punctuation). Much longer than 25 characters. There is an island named 'Q', so forget about more than 3 characters. I have an island named after a RL city. :p

As for the PG, well maybe they kept that one. In making my web based services I discovered to expect the unexpected. :)

Found a great Example: 'St. Martin' is a sim. Note not only is the the name of a real place, but that pesky period is a punctuation. :)

On reflection, the "not a real place" restriction has to mean, I think, "not a real place anyone at LL has heard of". Probably I wouldn't be able to call a sim "Boston" but I bet I could get away with calling it "Spalding" (note to non-UK readers; as well as being a place in the USA, Boston is a town in Lincolnshire, in the east of England, just down the road from a town called Spalding).

This exception to the no punctuation mark rule is odd... you would think that, if they don't like punctuation marks it wouldn't be too difficult to programme the computer to reject names containing them. Perhaps one might argue that it's not really a punctuation mark in this context; the period here serves to indicate the word's been contracted rather than to punctuate anything, but I doubt that's anyone's reasoning.

Well, it is just the example of the day, There are plenty more out there. So far to my Regular Expression parsing I've had to add the following for sim names:

Dashes -
Parens ( and )
Period .
Single quote '
Exclamation point !

I've encountered sims with all of these at some point in my name processing. And I'm sure something new will pop up eventually. :)

There is also an island named "X".

Found a sim named 'DS & DS' today. So have to add '&' to the list. :)
