I am fairly certain this isn't something that can be done (I certainly can't find any sort of variables/functions that would lend this sort of capability), but is it possible to convince an item that it is a particular time of day, all of the time?
Specifically, to do with textures with "shiny" applied- as certain items look perfect at one particular time of day...but I dislike the way the rest of the skyboxes reflect off them, and would really love to be able to have that one reflected sky at all times of day and night. While I could partially replicate the look through just making a texture, it would just be static, and part of what makes it perfect is the way shiny changes when you move.

It has nothing to do with the item, but rather the tiime of day on the client that is viewing it, whether that is the default sim time or one forced by the resident.

time of day...

Items dont recieve information as to what time of day it is so that it will be appropriately reflective for that paticular time of day. Rather, the time of day indicates the position and direction of the main light source (the sun), and the client renders objects based on what values it's currently getting from the server as to the position of the light sources. The only way you can force the sun to be where you want it to be, and stay there all the time, for everyone (not just in your client), is to own an island. Island owners can set the position of the sun, and even fix the sun's position if they so desire. So, to get the function you want (it does exist... ), you have to own an island... hope ya got deep pockets! P.S. one possible solution... force the sun in your client to sunrise, or sunset, or noon, whatever position makes your "item" look best, and advise people who visit to force the sun in their client to that setting, "for optimal effect" or something along those lines. That's about the best you can do sans island ownership.

Even then the client can override the time of day on the server, even more so with the coming of windlight.

That was what I figured, I was just hoping there was also some function that dealt with switching out the current skybox reflected on an item (and, of course, if there were, it would probably be broken as soon as Windlight was released, if not the next environmental change). I knew it was a longshot, but it never hurts to ask!

Right, but I was pointing out that the only thing you can do is to suggest the user change his client... of course the user can choose not to change, or to change to a different setting.
