From: VolatileWhimsy Bu is there a script that will record the people coming into a building? You can use a simple, free visitor counter. I'll have a friend of mine send you one (Stripped down to one prim.) in game, next time they're on.

You can get a free visitor list maker and a box of other useful free items at my store, location described below.
I went thru my inventory and sorted out the most useful free stuff I have collected in SL and put it in this freebie box. This is good useful stuff, not junk like lots of freebie boxes that I have seen.

If the building is one way in, one way out, you can use llVolumeDetect, and whenever it's triggered, add to a counter. Though, it will count people going out too, so you should be able to like, count one person for each off, unless they teleport out of the building.

Anyone able to point me towards a good counter? Hoping to modify it to read off people's names and greet them as they enter/leave..

Well, you can use their position during the 'collision_start' event to decide whether they are entering or leaving. So long as their speed isn't too great for the collision engine, anyone toward the outer edge of the object can be considered entering, and anyone toward the inner edge can be considered exiting. If you want to get complicated about it, you could compare positions between 'collision_start' and 'collision_end' events, but that's probably a lot of work for the payoff. Of course, if the space is small enough you could just fill the entire thing with 'llVolumeDetect()' objects instead of just the doorway, but this could potentially cause, " a little," lag.

THe problem is even though it may be 'logicially' one way in-one way out that won't hold up in SL. People can teleport out, teleport in (either direct teleport if the land doesn't prohibit it, or summoned by another person. Also there's AV phantom objects to allow passing through solid objects, the 'sit hack' where they just have to see a sittable surface and warp through walls. Oh and there's always the ability to rez a box, sit on it, and edit it through the walls. There is never a one-way only in SL

The free visitor detector can be easily modified to greet a visitor.
I've got a more sophisticated greeter that records and emails visitors, sends the right message and so on, as well as only greeting them a maximum of once per hour if they hang round. You can see it in operation in the shop in my sig line. It's not currently publicly available, but it will be going on sale sometime, for a suitably low price. If you'd like one IM me in world sometime and it will prompt me to redo it for you.

the least laggy way to detect vistors is probably using collision events: integer counter; default { on_rez(integer p) { llResetScript(); } state_entry() { llSetAlpha(0.0, ALL_SIDES); llVolumeDetect(TRUE); llSetObjectDesc("Vistors: 0"); } collision_start(integer num_detected) { ++counter; llSetObjectDesc("Visitors: " + (string)counter); // Uncomment the line below to greet... //llSay(0, "Hello there " + llDetectedName(0) + " and welcome!"); } }
