Data Access Worldwide is pleased to announce the beginning of the Alpha testing phase of our Second Life Database Project. This is an http driven interface to a perpetually hosted database using a powerful interface along with a web interface to deliver persistent out of game storage to second life developers. The scripts and hosting will be 100% free of charge. During the alpha period, we are looking for experienced scripters to help us kick the tires and offer suggestions on how we can improve this offering both in features and stability. If you are a competent LSL scripter and are interested in adding persistent database storage to your scripts, along with accessing your data via a web interface, please email me to request an example object, script, and full project documentation. We are ready to start enrolling alpha testers immediately. Email doug-g@dataaccess.com to request a userid/password and to be sent an ingame object with sample script and full documentation. Looking forward to working with the Second Life Developer community. Zaplok Riggles

From: Haruki Watanabe don't get me wrong - but why would you provide something like this for free? what's your benefit? The doc on the project spells it out quite plainly. We are a database company and want to expose new users to our product. We are also quite interested in becoming more a "part" of the virtual landscape and are following in the footsteps of other high tech companies like Microsoft and Cisco. We offer a personal edition of our software for free as well which serves the same purpose (allows folks to check out our products and use them for free in a non-commercial setting).

From: Haruki Watanabe don't get me wrong - but why would you provide something like this for free? what's your benefit? Probably for the same reason that we spend countless hours of our free time helping people here or why people become mentors or help with sldev. Plus the immeasurable amount of knowledge learned from setting up and debugging the service and then getting feedback from others. I don't have a domain registered to me or I would have put up one myself a long time ago. Most that anyone could gain offering a service like this, besides the above, would be a few scraps of info like readily available keys w/ names and maybe possibly an ip address or two. Can't imagine anyone storing critical passwords or credit card numbers. That's why I am not worried about using w-hat's httpdb. We take a lot more chances everyday visiting mainstream websites or installing even paid for software. I am still pissed this weekend because when reinstalling Nero, I accidently did a click through and installed thier Ask Toolbar also. The Ask Toolbar is a particularly nasty bit of spyware that then installs 6 other nasty programs. Took 4 hours to clean up all of the crap and the registry afterwords.

From: Haruki Watanabe don't get me wrong - but why would you provide something like this for free? what's your benefit? load testing and error checking... the easiest way to see if you missed something that will break a product is to let lots of people play with it =)
