Is there a way to detect which face of an object has been touched?

The short answer is the right answer.

But you can compute what side of an object an avator was standing when he/she touched it. For something big, like a door or a wall or a window, this may be a satisfactory indication, although by no means certain.

Which side of a prim - no.
Which side of an object - yes, at the cost of more prims. Depending on what you're trying to do, you could (for example) build a cube out of 6 seperate but linked, tapered cubes and detect which prim was touched.
