I don’t know anything about scripting – in fact, it’s a wonder that I can make my vendors work.
Sooo I have a question. I hate using vendors at all, I much prefer using boxes to give contents upon sale. The only reason I use vendors is because I have a couple of different lines of clothing that I have collaborated with another person on, and we want to split the profits. Is there a way to split profits without using vendors?
Also, I purchased a vendor that does split profits, but I’m now told by a mall owner that I cannot use it because it has “active scripts”, it lags the sim. Do vendors really cause lag?
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Yes, active scripts can potentially cause lag. But then again, pretty much anything does -- Objects, textures, sounds, particles and most of all -- Avatars. An effeciently coded script should not be a lag concern, but if the mall owner has set the rule of no active scripts, he/she has every right to enforce it. There is even a feature in SL to allow land parcel owners to set their land to not allow other scripts to run.
Remember that you, as the content creator, are the one with the power. There are plenty of malls that do allow vendors and even some that will allow you to sell your goods with no fees. There's now also SLExchange.com and secondserver.net which allow you to sell your goods online without having to put up a vendor anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not arguing the fact that the land owner has every right to enforce whatever rules he/she has put in place. If I don't like it, I'll take my business elsewhere I'm just trying to understand. Does every vendor use active scripts?

Yes. In order for a vendor to take money and give an object, it has to have a money event in it and a call to llGiveInventory(), which makes it an active script.

You might be debating the point with someone who isn't interested in hearing the facts, but most well designed vendos (e.g. Vendopf) are VERY light on the sim. They generally don't have any timers and/or sensors (things that CAN cause lag), and are 100% idle except when a shopper is "Touch"ing the arrows to scroll through the contents, paying the vendo to make a purchase, or when the owner is setting things up.

I’m actually not debating anything at all with anyone. The mall owner wants me to use a different vendor (and not one that all renters at that mall have to use), and I don’t want to go through the hassle of setting up yet another vending system just to use at one location. The mall owner’s reason is that it causes lag.
When I get in-world tonight, I’ll ask someone who knows about scripting and lag to take a look at my vendor, and if it does indeed cause lag, then it’s a valid point and I should probably replace all of my vendors with one that doesn’t.
But if it’s fine, which I expect it to be, then I’ll move on and rent elsewhere.
Thank you for the information, it was very helpful and I appreciate you both taking the time to answer!

I have a copy of the vending machine listed in the forums. It rezzes display models. Instead of textures. It dose have two things that can cause lags. A timer, and a rotation. But both of those things can be turned off. Yes it is possible to having a profit splitting machine that isn't a 'vender' but it basically a be a vendor for one object. And Id ought there would be much of a performance gane.
