Copy or transfer or what?

I have a question I want to put out to everyone about copy/transfer permissions. I may as well come out and say that this is related to Tringo since it'll be easy to explain with an example, and it'd probably be obvious to any Tringo owner anyway.

So here's the situation...
The main Tringo board is currently Mod/No Copy/Transfer. Within the contents of the Tringo board are some objects which are No Mod/Copy/No Transfer (e.g. the players cards). My original intent was to make Tringo transferrable, but with the current configuration it isn't because the objects in the contents which aren't transferrable, make the parent object non transferrable.

So... the obvious solution is to make the objects in the contents transferrable. Problem with that is that then any owner could pull copies of cards out of the main boards inventory and give them out as they please. Even though they'd really be no use on their own, my gut feeling is that there's people out there who'd try and sell that kind of thing to newbies who didn't know any better. But on the flipside, the cards must be copyable or there's no way the board can keep giving cards out as needed.

This seems like a fatal flaw in the object permissions to me, so I'm sure it's been brought up b4, but I'm interested to hear how other people deal with the situation (or if there's other options I haven't thought of). I'd really like to make Tringo transferrable in the future because I know a lot of people would prefer it that way, but atm it seems like it just isn't possible.

Fatal flaw for some, feature for others. I wouldn't be able to release my newest gadget if it wasn't possible to manipulate global permissions of the object with its content.

Normally, I would suggest to add some 'override' option for setting permissions, but that would take LL 2 years to implement and plug all the new exploits :p

Is this really a problem? It seems to me that having these objects being copy/transfer is not really a problem - as you said, they're of no use on their own.

So, assuming I understand you correctly, you're worried that people will resell some of your items which have no actual use on their own.

I hate to say it, but people can and will sell entirely useless items whether or not you tag your objects copy/transfer or not :)

What about using a centralized server that distributes objects as necessary to players upon request via llEmail or XMLRPC?

The cards in my games are copy and trans, no mod. The cards won't do anything unless they've set up communication with the main board so yeah they are useless ... I don't think anyone would sell them. If you really want to you could have the cards delete themselves if they don't set up communications with the main board in a timely fashion?

Another thing you could do is you can pass a parameter on rez ... if an avatar rezes an object this parameter isn't passed (it might default to 0 or -1, not sure). So on rez if the parameter wasn't passed then llDie() ??

But really if someone wanted to sell bogus items they could just take a screenshot of your card then upload the texture, put it on a prim and name it "Tringo" and sell it like that. So don't sweat it. Just make them copy trans and spend time on way cool features. No reason to babysit everyone =c)

It would be nice if Tringo was transferrable ... I want to sell mine and I can't! YIKES

Yeah, I don't have my club anymore and would like to sell mine too, however..

A tringo game takes maybe 15 minutes to play, why not just set the date in a variable when it is first rezzed from the Tringo board and then check it on rez anytime it is rezzed in the future.

If it's not being rezzed by the Tringo board and the data is Date+X hours, llOwnerSay("Sorry, this Tringo card has expired, please get a new one.";); then send it to llDie?

Just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I guess I'd sorta already hinted at the answer in my first post, but I didn't see it cause I wasn't looking at it from a wide enough perspective. I'm definately convinced that the situation isn't made any worse by making the cards copy/mod, so that's what I'll do in future.

So for those of you that are wanting to sell your boards just hang on a little longer. The next version of Tringo will be a free upgrade and you'll be able to transfer it after you've upgraded.
