I can think of a lot of *bad* ways to detect an AV position. For example, you could shoot smart bullets in random directions until one of them hits it.
What's wrong with using a sensor? _____________________

llDetectedPos also works in touch and collision events.
but to get the object to follow the avatar, you'll need to use either a sensor repeat or a timer, most commonly a sensor repeat _____________________

while I think Lee's way would be amusing, if you're in an event that doesn't use detected functions then llGetObjectDetails will work also.
