I'm new to all of this and hope I'm not asking a stupid question, but I don't understand what command in a script causes a HUD to appear. I know you can make objects and turn them into HUDS, but many scripts produce a "default" looking blue HUD and just don't get how it gets there. Thanks

afaik the only way to make a hud of any sort is as an attachment. Any script thats making a hud appear is either requesting permission to attach to a user, or already attached and perhaps turning itself transparent or moving out of the users field of view on the hud attachment pane.
a good exercise to get a feel for what a hud is would be to get a freebie hud and attach it, then right click and edit it, you can move and rotate it like any other prim in the world.. its just treated special when its attached to a hud location and only visible to your client.

The "default blue HUD" is created using llDialog and is not normally considered to be a HUD object.
Beyond that, Shadow is quite correct. Any other HUD is made as a prim object which is attached to your screen, in just the same way that an SL boot might be attached to your foot. There is no special command for creating a HUD; you just make an object to fit in that particular attachment position.
