Is there any way to start an animation on an avatar from a UUID? If not does anybody know why we can Copy Asset UUID by right clicking on an animation in the inventory??

I don't believe there is any way to start an animation using its UUID.
The reason you can copy the UUID? Because all UUIDs can be copied in the same way including, for example, the UUID for a shape, or a skin. Neither of these things can be used in a script either but they represent the fundamental identifiers of asset items in SL.

I seem to remember that back a yr or possibly two ago (am I really that old now?) we used to have that ability, but during one of the oh so great updates that functionality was removed/broken and has never made it back.

I'm not sure it would be that useful, though, if the object still had to contain the animation to trigger the animation. And if the object *didn't* need the animation in its inventory, it would be extraordinarily bad news for the animation industry. (But come to think of it, how is that different from textures? Although licenses for full-perm textures constrain distribution of the textures themselves, is there any constraint on distributing their UUIDs? There must be a reason I'm missing.)
