Autopiloted vehicles just... stopping for no good reason

This was vexing me yesterday. I have a vehicle that is controlled by a timer. All it does is move up and down between two positions. The timer checks the distance to the current target - at the bottom, it turns off physics, uses llSetPos to position itself exactly, and waits for a bit before setting off again.

When the vehicle is between the targets all it does is update the velocity parameter to point towards the current target, changing the speed depending on distance to target so it slows down as it reaches it.

At the top it rezzes a load of objects, and then - in THEORY - comes back down, to start the whole process again. If I'm sitting on it or following it or nearby generally this seems to work perfectly well. However, if I teleport away and come back later, I find that the balloon is sitting in the air up above the base, doing nothing. When I touch it or sit on it or even right click and select edit (not even making any changes) it starts down again.

I've often found before that unpiloted vehicles do sometimes behave oddly like this, just not moving until you touch them or edit them. However, it's previously been when I make modifications to the script, and when rezzed and moving, they're okay.

I'd rather not use llSetPos to move it, I prefer physical movement for things like this, but I might have to at this rate.

The answer to the question of, "If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around, does it still make a sound?" is "no", in second life.

Or such has been my experience.

However, if one then returns to the tree, it's actually fallen down. Here, the balloon needs a prod. I can't have people coming to my area and thinking "what's that pipe there, maybe it does something, I'll wait around to see what happens, oh, I'm bored now, this is rubbish". They may well think it's rubbish but at least they could make an informed decision after seeing the balloon doing its thing.

Force a full update on the prim constantly. A rapidly-chanigng llSetText or llSetColor.

Hmm, I think those would probably look a bit weird. Are there other things that force a reset, whatever that is? It's already got a timer running so I could just put it in that.

Well, you could switch between set text'ing a single space and 2 spaces. It would have no visible effect.

Or create a hollow inside a prim and change the color on that.
