Instead of taking your object back, you can simply delete it (Right-click >> More >> Delete). You should do this if you have not made any changes to your object (e.g if you were simply testing it and found it worked okay). However, if you do change it then you should take it as normal, and then simply delete the old version in your inventory. It may be easier to delete it first THEN take the rezzed object, just be careful you don't delete both! Although it goes to your trash anyway so all won't be lost.
If you are constantly taking newer copies and deleting old versions (as I find myself doing) then it's good practise to keep your trash tidy, open it up every now and then, skim it to see if anything is there that shouldn't be. Then right click on the trash icon and choose empty to tidy it up for good. Firstly because it keeps the damned thing tidy enough that when you DO delete something by accident, you can find it again! Also it helps keep your inventory smaller overall, I dunno how long SL waits before permanently removing trash items for you.

Can't get in-world at the moment - but there are options (on the Tool menu, I think) to "save selected back to inventory" and "save selected back to contents" that will just update the copy in your inventory, or in the host object's contents, if you have made changes.
