Particles Disappearing?

I have several objects using particles. They're decorative things, non-combat. These objects are many months old and have always worked just fine. Just lately, I can't say exactly when, these particle emitters seem to randomly just stop emitting. Because they've worked for months, I'm confident it is not a scripting error. The objects are touch on/off - so I simply turn them off and then on again and they're working fine - for a while. Sometimes they run fine for hours - sometimes only minutes. I know the object is still "on" because it has moving parts - but the particles just stop emitting. I've tried tweaking several particle parameters with no luck. Anyone else seeing similar symptoms recently? Anyone know the cause or a workaround? Is this a viewer bug or feature that I missed in the release notes somewhere?

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. At first I thought it was limited to particles emitting from non-root prims, but that doesn't seem to be the case. This defect is so sporadic, I'd been kinda hoping it would get fixed as a side-effect of fixing one of the many other particle defects in the jira.

does it have anything to do with the max particles count setting?

when you hit that number specificed, you wont be able to see any particle.

I've recently noticed this, too.

There was a client bug with the particle stuff a while ago where they would emit fewer and fewer particles until all emitters eventually stopped but I thought that was fixed. Maybe this new problem is related to that or to its fix?

If you TP away then TP back, do they start up again?

Thanks Randal - great idea but I don't think so. The emitters are working just fine when turned on and then stop even though no additional particles are turned on. I've purposefully tested these things in environments where no other particles are visible with the same results. The items themselves don't emit a lot of particles.

Thanks Meade. Yeah - it is probably a bug of some kind but I sure would like to find a workaround. The particles don't start up again by leaving and returning. They don't even start up again if I relog. The only thing that seems to work is manually starting and stopping them. I've also reset the pieces several times which starts them up again but doesn't solve the problem.

The weirdest part is that I have several variations of these objects that are all basically the same. Exactly one seems to never have this problem. I keep examining it for what's different and have tried several variations to try and match the one that's working with no luck. Could just be coincidence but the 'good' one has been running several days without a hiccup while the others don't. I'll keep looking for the common thread.

These are what you might call 'art' pieces. There are two invisible emitters in each one that are being controlled by a script so that they move around in a pattern and 'draw' with particles. Kinda like the old Spirograph. Perhaps there's some esoteric conflict in the movement script - and yet, the 'good' one uses the same movement script so I don't get it. It is insanely frustrating that one of them works (even multiple copies of the 'good' one all work) but other nearly identical pieces don't work. It's the kind of thing that drives us programmers to drink!

Well, I'm getting the problem intermittently in a subset of *identical* objects, so I don't know how to try to separate the sheep from the goats. (I just figured the "sheep" were uncommonly lucky so far.) And mine are completely stationery, so I think the problem isn't with movement.

Thanks for that input Qie. It always helps to have more information for debugging!

FYI - I completely cleared my cache by moving it to another hard drive and that seemed to fix this issue -- at least so far!
