XYtext and XYZtext are the same ?

Hi all I am kinda confuse today I had a conversation with a friend and he told me that XYtext and XYZtext are not the same he said that the XY use multiple textures for set the letter and the XYZtext use just texture that have all the characters is that true =/ I thought that XYtext and XYZ were the same can someone explain thsi to me
