I'm constantly amazed at what some have achieved with 1 tortured prim. Take for example a sliding door item in the script library (forum). Is there a theory, a mathematics a science even to how prim properties work? It's hard to believe that people discover these things jut by trial and error. So what's the secret?

The secret is trial and error. Take a prim and mess with the various properties and see what you get. You'd be surprised what you can stumble into with a couple hours of messing around, sometimes even by accident in the course of building.

Trial and error ;)

But seriously, there is mathematics involved in some cases, I'm sure, but usually it's likely to just be trial and error, and word of mouth after that. The math is mostly used in positioning, not the shaping, I believe. (I rarely use math in shaping my prims, but I also don't use oddly shaped prims that have been tortured all that much)
