Can anyone tell me the range of the Z axis for the sun direction vector?
Does it go from -1 to 1 or what?

Yeah, and if z is negative, the sun is below the horizon. (it's night time). Also bear in mind that the day is 4 hour long, with 1 hour of night, so the sun moves faster at night.
