Replacing random values in lists

I have an application I'm working on that requires me to set up a list with "yes" or "no" flags that corresponding to entries in another list to tell me whether or not that list entry has been processed or not. I can do the look up easy enough, but how do I go about changing, for instance, the value of the third element in the list from a 1 to a 0? Everything I read in the WIKI shows how to append to a list or process a list, but I can't find any examples of replacing one specific element. I know I'm overlooking something obvious, but I just can't figure it out.

Any ideas, suggestions, or advice would most certainly be welcome.

Thank you,
Ford

you might also want to check out llList2List and llDeleteSubList (which can actually be mimicked by the first function)
