I've been in a couple of fights but I'm still uncertain if I made some actual kills or if my target just teleported to another part of the combat area. And if the gun doesn't cause damage: how do I make it cause damage?

There's no real confirmation of a kill using SL Health zone. From: brother Akami And if the gun doesn't cause damage: how do I make it cause damage? Replace the scripts inside with better scripts.

Bullets are objects which have had llSetDamage(x); run on them, where x is an integer from 1 to 100 being the damage that is done. As long as your bullet has llSetDamage in its script at setup, in state_entry or on_rez usually, it will do damage.

From: someone How do I find out if a gun does damage? Get a friend, go to a damage enabled sim, give gun to friend and ask friend to shoot you. Did you die or loose health? If so, then the gun does damage. If not, your friend may have missed or the gun may be ineffectual versus your defences, or may be not working (some freebies guns come with no scripts inside).

you could try lining it up laterally against your eyeball and pulling the trigger,
spilt blood/brains and holes in skulls would be the criteria you're looking for for a positive test result indication.
i believe the llGetHasMySkullBeenBlownToBitsStatus command is the one for this if you want to return the result to the script.
which you could then use as a trigger for the next little bit of fun.
not sure if the llHasThatNewbieWithThePunyWikiGunScriptLearnedHisLesson will be implemented soon or not, When it is I'd go with that instead.
