Is there a way a prim can list to something said to it and IM what it hears to a predetermined Avatar key? If so can someone give me a few tips on how it might be done?

Sure... just llListen() with the tightest filters you possibly can, then in the listen() event llInstantMessage() the known avatar's key whatever message for which it was listening. (This, by the way, is a common "spy" technique which, of course, is a serious ToS violation.)

unless it's on your land and you inform anyone it records that you are recording.... (at least that's what I heard last since the whole chat logging thing became inbuilt to the viewer)

it is a good for trick for "PA" type systems (listen -> send2rangeExtender -> repeatContents)

and not bad for shop talk in crowded sims between people working together that don't care for a separate group chat (walkie-talkie style coms for RP atmosphere anyone?)
