I have on occasion placed a script (animation, rotation, texture swapper, floating text etc) into a prim, then later deleted it but the action still persists. The only way I have found to make it stop is to delete that prim and start again. Is there a ghost in sl?

Any functions that effect the prims attributes will persist even after the script has been removed. The obvious ones are llSetColor, llSetAlpha but also llSetText, llSitTarget, Particle System, Texture and texture animation.... So just about every one you mentioned!

From: AWM Mars So there are ghosts in sl? Only if you count the fact that you told the prim to show the word hello but didnt tell it to stop a ghost...

Those functions listed by Newgate affect properties of the prim, not the script. Once you apply them to the prim, they become independent of the script.
Imagine spray painting a bus red. Remove the spray gun, and the bus stays red. The red colour is not a property of the spray gun (script), but a property of the bus (prim).
