You mean as in having a Third Life that your avatar accesses from within Second Life??

O.o

Wow, this subject really is what I thought it was initially.

After that, I thought "nah.. has to be another question about multi-dimensional arrays", so I open the thread.

Whoa! o.O

What, exactly, are you referring to when you say "alternate dimension"? Seriously, it sounds intriguing. :)

I suggest using alternate scripting techniques.. heavily.

This actually is an interesting topic I've wondered about as well. Back in my coding days on a cyberpunk MUD we had to deal with netrunners being able to jack into cyberspace which was in effect a world within a world. This was done by generating a new body for them inside the cyberspace world and transferring control from their "meatbody" to their avatar body. That worked at the time but was less than ideal for quite a few reasons. At any rate, I don't see how this could even be achieved within SL. Indeed the only "netrunning" system I've seen, over in Nexus Prime, tped your regular AV into their "netspace" area which rather makes the entire thing pointless from my perspective. (Yes, I focused on 1 specific type of "out of body experience" here but the same principles would apply to any general scenario that required the player to be on 2 planes of "existence" at once.)

I still have little clue what all this is on about, but then I'm psychotropically-deprived. ;) It occurs to me, though, that some level of illusion might be achieved with a scripted pseudo-avatar that takes controls and cam controls--but the pseudo-AV's life would be pretty boring: it couldn't wear attachments or sit or get regular avatar animations or... much of anything except roam about and look at stuff, I guess. A *much* more ambitious approach might be to hack the opensource client to basically gang together two viewers for a main character and an alt, perhaps... if I'm even gr0kking the concept at all.

You do grasp the concept, at least in the manner I was speaking of. This sort of thing is only really an issue in cyberpunk and fantasy RPGs where it is possible for a player to "leave" their normal body (AV) in order to appear in another world (think the Matrix) with an entirely different body. This is required because in those settings the original body remains where it was...but totally unconscious and therefore helpless should it be attacked. In any event, I have no practical application for this myself but the concept as it applies to SL has crossed my mind due to the limitations you cited.
