I have been looking for a basic HUD script to get an idea of how its done. Does anyone have one?
Thank You

hud's are just prims glued to your screen in 2d, scripting wise they are no different, need something with a bunch of buttons and options, its the same as if it were in 3d ect

here's the secret to a "pushbutton HUD"... the kind of hud you can use to replace blue-menus.
You get the name... of the prim number in the linset... that received the touch event... and say that name.... on a channel. Your object... Listens for that say. Master prim holds this "relay" script, and a texture for the HUD. Child prims are all 100% transparent, overlapping buttons painted on the texture. Child prims are named the keywords you wish to listen for. On, Off, TransformUp, TransformDown, Red, Green, Blue, SmokeOn.... etc. CODE
<strike> Now the real trick is.. How do you get your HUD to receive communicated data from the controlled object? (since evidently HUD's can't listen?) </strike> _____________________

I second that-- HUDs can certainly receive chat.

I've heard this as well from a business partner who tested the assertion. And it does appear to her that HUDs can indeed listen. I'm going to personally verify this myself tonight.
But looks like that "can't listen" assertion was erroneous. _____________________

The only thing I have found that a HUD cannot do is play a sound using llPlaySound, instead you need to use llTriggerSound or llTriggerSoundLimited.
One advantage of a HUD mount is that object chat does not produce 'sparklies' |

Have they fixed HUDs so they can emit particles correctly?
But otherwise yes, there's little HUDs can't do, they're just a prim after all. _____________________

It sort of saddens me that HUDs are not in any way related to the camera - all chat and other such things function as if they were a part of the avatar itself. Since the HUD itself moves with the camera not the avatar, it's not quite intuitive..

Luckily you can create an "avatar" (let's call it a 'sprite') to follow your camera. This of course only works in places you can build... but sometimes you can get away with it for short periods in malls and stuff.
What can you do with this sprite? well for one, people can see where you're looking. (useful in a mall.. "hey joe, look at these shoes" ... you can also load a "listener" into it.. and with careful use of a hud based chat repeater, you could in theory create an intercom of sorts. Allowing you to talk and listen via your sprite.(I like putting floating text over my sprite as well, so that it has a "name tag" - so people know it's associated with me.. but I'm thinking about using a particle instead to more closely mimic the "avatar name" floaters.) _____________________

The only thing I have found that a HUD cannot do is play a sound using llPlaySound, instead you need to use llTriggerSound or llTriggerSoundLimited. This only applies on parcels with "Restrict spatialized sound to this parcel" checked. See last paragraph here. |

This only applies on parcels with "Restrict spatialized sound to this parcel" checked. See last paragraph here. If llPlaySound is used in an attached HUD object, the sound will only be heard by the user wearing the HUD. ... To play a sound from a HUD and have others hear it, use llTriggerSound instead. That is exactly why we used llTriggerSound.... |

Ah, yes, if you want anyone other than the owner to hear the sound. I was thinking in terms of "owner-only" sounds. Apologies for the confusion.

OK I'll chime in here.
Wish list: Owner only sounds in RL!!!! At 50 years old I sound like a factory now when there is any movement at all. Creaks, groans, pops etc. When my daughter was about 2 years old we noticed something was wrong. Whenever she got up from the floor she groaned like she was in pain. Kept checking her and even brought her to the doctor. We finally figured it out......................................... She thought she was supposed to make sounds when she got up, just like mom and dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _____________________
