I've run into several situations at shops where I have purchased a purported item, but the item itself does not show in my inventory, except as an object. For example, a box states it is a suit set. I select purchase, pay, but all I actually have is the box that the purported suit was in. Looks a little strange to be wearing a box.
Have I been cheated? Or is there something to this I am missing?
Sorry for such a basic question, only a couple days old in SL years. Thanks.

Don't worry. The item you purchased is in the box. To get it out, rez the box onto the ground and then right click the box and select Open from the pie menu. This will display a list of contents of the box.
Then you need to copy the items in the box into your inventory. Normally, you could use the Copy All button to do this, but there have been some bugs with this button recently. You may be forced to individually drag each item from the box into your inventory. (To keep everything together, make a new folder first and drag everything onto it.)

(it was a hat and I ended up wearing a refrigerator sized box on my head for about 20 minutes until someone helped me get it off. Thank you, whoever you are. Without that guy I'd probably still be wearing it!)
