SL to Internet Communications

Hi all,

I'm currently doing research for an SL news article on the various ways that LSL scripters are communicating with outside web servers to do cool things. I've seen the flickr integration discussed here:

http://www.hackdiary.com/archives/000085.html

I've also seen the Amazon Web Services building that will show a picture of any web page on a prim surface.

What other excellent examples of off-world communications do you know? If you've done a lot of work with stuff like this, please send me a private message in these forums or contact me in game.

I'm guessing that most stuff like this uses the llHttpRequest function with the return data coming in the http_response event. Are there other LSL functions that do similar stuff? What about the XML-RPC stuff?

Thanks for any help!

I'm afraid you don't have forum PMs enabled. :(

My company uses llHttpRequest for various things -- my favorite is for pulling data into SL from RSS feeds. But I think you'll find that having a script email data is much more common, and a more powerful tool than many imagine. It might be old-school, but we use it for things like tools that track user statistics or create chat logs for clients; it's convenient in that my client neither has to dedicate server space, nor have my company handle their data.

I do home automation/virtual home stuff (www.vcrib.com). I would like to put either a 2D page in SL or better yet, rebuild my virtual house inside of SL. Not sure if I will be able to get the info in and out of SL. Bottom line, I want to control my real house from the virtual world and have the virtual house sync its status from my real house.

SORRY my site is out of date, I have updates ready for uploading when I get back in town next week, but check it out anyway. My demo videos will give a good idea of what I am doing and maybe I can get a little feedback on the possibility of interfacing it.

Getting data out of SL in ANY form is good enough, I will write the rest...

vcrib looks cool -- but can you easily import your "home" created via vcrib into SL?

vCrib looks cool.. regarding rewiring SL object to your home.. just have http web server and in SL on every interesting event send http request to your home web server... and otherway round.. other way round migth be more difficult to maintain time/speed/connection robustnes/responsivity but you can do it as email pushing in WindwsMobile works.. via "heartbeats" conenctions... SL object sends httprequest and waits for one-5 minute(s) your home server replies on tcp/ip http channel when events in you home happen.. if they dont connection is closed in 1-5 min. If you want to discuss it ... just drop by inworld.

Nabaztag Interface

On the home automation front (just) I've set up a link between a virtual Nabaztag (a white conical rabbit), and a real WiFi linked Nabaztag in my kitchen, so whenever someone visits it calls out to me in audio to let me know who's visiting.

Went to check out your RSS reader, interested in that I saw it overcomes SL 2048 limitations (something I was just frustrated with) and was distracted enough to the point that although I bought the RSS script, I never checked it out! This sounded very cool...
