Hi, I have a couple of questions, and since SL appears to be all scripted I am hoping to get a better understanding of some items right here...

1. How do you obtain an AV's Key? are there simple Tools?

2. The other day I was mysteriously launched into orbit., I found it rather amusing and primitive. Is there any log of what happened, but primarily is there a way to tell which exact weapon did this to me?

4. Are there any weapons on SL that physically damage a property or objects on it? (I am considering investing some money to buy property and maybe a business etc, and would like to know the worst case scenarios are)

What is the most serious damage that can be potentially done to a property by a malicious script?

5. Are there any countermeasures to banning by name from a property? Are there anti-banning tools?

6. Can a character(AV) be assassinated, including his items and money taken? What is the most serious Damage that an AV can sustain?

Sorry to sound ignorant, but after reading about all the attacks on secondlifers I am now very curious.

Thanks in advance for great technically based answers to these questions.

The most common way is via a sensor or touch event and llDetectedKey(), but you can also look an avatar up in a Key2Name database offline. That would be a bit much for a weapon, though.

No. The user can find out who did it (although a script can't), but not what weapon they used.

No. There are grid attackers that can cause an area to crash, which can potentially cause data loss in the region, but these are not legitimate weapons and are fortunately very rare. The Lindens are very good at banning people who use these.

That depends: if the script is run by someone else, then there's very little apart from crashing as above. Attacks can be made by means other than scripts, such as porn attacks (putting illegal material on textures inside your property), or rezzing objects overlapping vendors.

The most effective way of damaging your property is to pass you a script, or a scripted object, and convince you to rez it or install it into an object of yours. Such a script can ruin the prim build it is in, steal textures or other aspects of the build, steal your money (if you give it permission, but it might be disguised to look like giving permission would be a good idea) and so on. Because of this, you must be extremely careful with scripted objects you recieve.

No, but a person banned from a property can still script objects that move into the property they are banned from, or create objects which overlap into it.

No, a character cannot be assassinated. Money can be stolen by trickery. The most serious damage an AV can sustain is, generally, to be deformed by being forced to run a malformatted animation or being orbited so high the coordinate system fails. Legitimate weapons should do no more damage than sending you home.

Doesn't it depend on how the orbitting was done? I know that Mystitool can report all collisions with your avatar, identifying the specific object that did it and, I think, the owner of the object. Of course, that may not be much help if the name of the object is "Object", but it's something.

Hi VonGklugelstein, good questions.

1. Finding an av's key: In-world, a script can report the key of any nearby avatar and any avatar who interacts with the object the script is in. Externally, there are databases that can map an av name to its key. For Abuse Reports, you only need a name.

2. Log of orbiting weapon attack and determination of what weapon did it: Often possible, if you have prepared for it. You can wear a script that reports information about any object that hits you (name, location, owner, etc.), which applies to many weapons. MystiTool has such a feature. Otherwise, there is no way to get that information historically after the offending object no longer exists in world.

3.

4. Weapons physically damaging property: Only indirectly, kinda, in a way. For example, if the landowner has set the land parcel settings to permit it, someone could bring in a scripted object and terraform the land into a big mess. That can be a little hassle or big hassle to restore the land contour. And if the land settings permit it, scripts can push some objects off the parcel and make them hard to find and recover. Landowners can apply settings to prevent these tactics.

In general, scripts cannot delete someone else's objects or take or de-rez them (except for occasional problems in the SL infrastructure, but there is no reliable way to exploit those erratic glitches). A more common and practical concern is that if the land settings permit it, a script can rez multiple copies of something really annoying on a parcel, but there is no lasting damage because the land owner has the necessary tools to clean up the mess.

5. Banned avatars getting back in: The parcel access and ban lists work reliably and are implemented on the sim server (not the client), so there are no countermeasures. Banned avatars can fly over at high altitude, or get close enough to listen, move their camera around, take sensor scans to collect information about your objects, etc.

6. Be robbed and killed permanently: only if you have given away your password. No one can take your money from you by force, but you can be the victim of a scam if you are too trusting.
