I am curious about how long a prim will retain it's key if it is not attached to something and is not moving between sims? Will it retain the key even if the sim crashes?
Thanks.

Moving to another sim, even teleporting while attached to an avatar, will not change its key.
And as I posted in this thread: /54/83/132326/1.html ...As long as an object remains rezzed inworld, and you never Right-click > Take, it will keep its key, even through sim crashes/restarts/etc. Only way an object will get a new key is to drag from your inventory (or an objects contects) to the world. _____________________

only when an object is rezed does it recieve a new key. For attachments that only happens when the object is attached (or at logon).

Prim keys are mostly static unless they re-rez somehow (such as attachments), however a extremely bad sim crash can cause prim keys to change (I've witnessed this happen once in my three years here)

It'd be nice if LL would allow us to rent a set of static UUIDs which we could apply to assets as we see fit.
Seems it might save some llEmail() calls if, for example, a notecard could be assigned a static UUID. Then, products wouldn't need to "phone home" via whatever communications methods are used. They would simply read the same notecard UUID and if line one of the notecard say, "update needed" then the reset of the notecard could be read and processed for whatever purpose. I'd pay maybe L$50/week or month for a set of 5 static UUIDs. |
