Hey gang,
Just wondering if it's possible for an object to scan certain avatar's inventory for some item? For example, can I have a prim that when touched, checks if an avatar that touched it has item named "item name" in ava's inventory?
Thanks.

Thanks. Nope, not possible with script, custom client or libsl.

you ALSO can't scan to see if a given avatar is WEARING an ATTACHMENT with a specific name.. (and forget about clothing, skins, etc).
However, you COULD build a sort of "intercom protocol" where object A is touched, and says "hello? So-and-so just touched me" on a given channel.. Wearable Attachment B having a listen on that channel, says "Hi, I'm Attachment B and I belong to so and so".
likewise, you could make a scripted "box"... which the person could put "item X" into... Then the box could check the item, get it's name, creator, inventory type, etc.. and then communicate that information back to the "sensor object". Once checked, the box could give the item back, and even delete itself.
This could be useful, for example, if you wanted to do some kind of "clothing upgrader" or something. They put the old jacket into their box, and then the box scans for the name, creator, creation date, key, etc...
As for what may or may not be possible for a custom client.. I'll leave that answer to Jesse's far-more-capable hands to decide.

Heck, you done surpassed my meager scripting abilities a loooong time ago girl! But to elucidate more on the subject; the only way to see what is in someone else's inventory would be to either trick them into downloading either a program onto thier computer to interccept the stream, downloading a hacked client or by bribing a Linden. All of the possibilies are not only against the TOS but the laws of a most countries.

What possible reason would you have to go nosing around someone's private inventory anyway?

From: Johan Laurasia What possible reason would you have to go nosing around someone's private inventory anyway? Winter may have guessed the correct reason, for updating objects. If that is what you are hoping to do Ivan, let us know and we can point you to a couple of threads.

Objects can be scripted to update themselves on rez. I'd prefer to keep things as they are and not allow someone to write a script that could nose around my inventory thanks.
