Is there a way to tell which face of a prim was touched to start the touch_start event? I can't see anything in llDetected() that seems to do that.

Im not 100% sure but im fairly positive this is a prim by prim thing. That you cannot get a touch event per face of a prim.

This is, by the way, flagged as an enhancement and has been definitely noted by LL - I think the proposed function was called llDetectedSide.
Yes, I know that could mean any length of time before it occurs if ever, but I thought I would add a hopeful note. I imagine it's somewhere on the Jira....
In the meantime I suggest that you use different thin prims on each side (as Mrc suggests) and use llDetectedLinkNumber - inefficient, I know, but one has to work with what one has.

Nope, that isn't what that script is doing. All that does is add a texture to a different side of the prim each time you touch it, starting with side 0. It is, as the name says, an "side announcer", not a "side detector".

depending on your application you could cheat it though.... for instance a door that swings both ways... have it get the position of the touching av, compar to it's own and swing away
same trick should work for collisions too

Oh, well. I guess I'll have to wait for the update, whenever that comes out.

Vote for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-519 !! From: SVC-519 llDetectedFace for detecting the face of a prim touched by an avatar Similar semantics as llDetectedLinkNumber, just return the face-number instead the prim-number the avatar clicked on. Detailed description: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlDetectedFace

It would be possible on a 5 x 5 grid to achieve a double click routine using 10 prims (5 vertical and 5 horizontal) to replace 25. The first click would shift the prim back and record the horizontal value. The second click would register the vertical value and select the face.
Just thinking how that would save prims on one of my favorite games in SL.

You could use temp on rez...
12-15-2007 10:48
Use a timer to repeated rez N temp prims. Each one would have an id. When touched, they send a message to the master brain prim.
This would avoid prim limits, and not be a serious violation of the prim limits unless N gets unreasonably large.
