Before you do anything else, visit the SL wiki at . You'll find links to most of the basic information you want about business, scripting, and other topics. Once you have that much under your belt, you'll know where to start asking the harder questions. Meanwhile, you'll probably find the timer you're looking for on XStreetSL or by asking in the Products Wanted forum.

...and watch out for using terminology like "player" or "playing" in Second Life. People can get very adamant about SL being a virtual world, not a game. :)

To be honest, it doesn't really bother me either way, I just wish I made even half of the money that Tiger Wood's makes for 'Playing' golf. If you have a hobby that generates an income, or a Job that you do for fun as well, then the distinction between, work, play and, in this case, Platform become very blurred.

Many of us with in-world businesses are hoping to legitimize said endeavors by deliberately not referring to Second Life as a game. That being said, I'm assuming that, for most users, it does function as a form of entertainment, and therefore I still consider Second Life a game and myself as a content developer, so everybody wins. Point being, I don't really care what you call it, but yes, some people may disapprove.

At any rate, www.lslwiki.net will quickly become your most valuable resource if you have a serious interest in scripting. Read the tutorials and code along with them to start, and from there you can start making use of the functions library on the wiki. Join the 'Open Source Scripters' and 'Scripters of Second Life' groups in world for support.

Good luck with everything. It's tough at first if you don't have any programming experience -- stick with it, though. It gets easier with time.

It's not just people with businesses. There are many, many colleges and universities, government agencies, libraries, and other organizations in SL. We fight a constant battle against the impression that we are "playing" instead of teaching and providing public information. Every time a newspaper or a blog refers to SL as a game, it puts us back under the microscope and makes it harder to maintain trust and keep funding for our work. We DO have great fun, but this is a professional platform for our work, not a playground.

Of course, when we're off the clock ........:p

Hey, SL entertains me too. In fact, that's how I know it isn't a game. Games bore the hell out of me. I'm not interested in jumping through a bunch of some game developer's hoops. :p
