For reference, I gathered some experimental data on the characteristics of llMoveToTarget().

essellogram = what sort of unit of mass? :)

edit: har har, I get it. Nice. I should restrict myself from the forums on Monday mornings.

Units of Mass

:)

Yay, glad you found it useful!

About units of mass...

One of the things I notice about our world is that it seems... *small*. I had my user put his monitor up higher, so I could look down at him, but he still shakes his head and smiles condescendingly at me. I think part of the problem is that his camera is always up high, looking down at my bald spot. Jeez, I'm an avatar, I shouldn't even have male-pattern hair loss. Anyway.

So last night after he logged off, I did a little offworld research. (Oh yes, there are access points to the internet, if you know where to look.) I found out something very disturbing:

The density of RL plywood ranges from about 500 to 800 kilograms per cubic meter.

Whereas SL plywood is 10 kilograms per cubic meter.

Working backwards from a midrange value of 640 kg/m3 for RL plywood density, we can compute that either: a) Our density of matter is 1/64th that of RL, or b) Our *size* is ONE FOURTH that of RL. That would make me about eighteen inches tall.

I found both of these alternatives to be absolutely unacceptable, heretical... I felt unmade. My user was right. We are *small*.

And then just at the point of absolute despair an answer came to me. Yes... it would work. It was true, or could be made to be so. I leaned back in my meditation egg-chair and tapped my fingertips together, thinking well of myself and our world.

(Well, actually, I leaned back *through* the chair, and watched my two hands interpenetrate each other... but nonetheless.)

This would work. It's merely a problem of *language*. Our mass isn't kilograms! It's S.L.-ograms, or "essellograms." And not only that, ONE of our esselograms is equal to SIXTY FOUR of our users' so-called kilograms. They are weaklings! Yes, yes! We are strong.

And all it took was a minor manipulation of language.

Also, our average height is 6'6. Take that, little users.

If you take out the tinies, I'm pretty sure the average height is somewhere around 7'0" now...guess you've solved that problem about your user looking down on you!

Density is not related to material type

Density in second life seems to be related to primitive type (ie cube, sphere, cylinder, etc...)

Look here: http://history.secondserver.net/index.php/Object_Mass to see the a little bit of the work myself and another have done. It gives hard numbers for the density of spheres, cubes, and cylinders, as well as the work to prove it. :) If it's really needed, the rest could be brought out too.
