I've seen this done before, does anyone have any tips on how to change a prims texture based on the suns placement?

You can get the sun direction vector with llGetSunDirection() and go from there. I've used it to change day and night textures, but it could be a lot more complex depending on how into it you want to get.

Yeah, good pickup. This is gonna be essential to make special builds appear how they are meant to in Windlight viewers when purple is not in the chosen colour scheme.

How does windlight hurt?

How does windlight hurt textures? I have yet to see it actively, where anything looks wrong in Windlight vs normal viewer, but maybe its just me.. I use max settings, and shiny can look a little TOO shiny on low and medium (I think high is fine), but.. I don't see any colour problems.

Would you be willing to post pics or anything?

check in the texture forum for the most glaring examples (a month or 3 back)... windlight tends to over shadow and over hilight in many cases, and it's scarily apparent on many skins... when windlight goes mainstream it'll be interesting to see if people can find a happy testuring medium between min and max settings...

Okies cool.. I stil haven't seen it in person lol.. I have yet to see a skin that looks bad by windlights fault (The only ones I see that look bad are because well.. they are.)

So.. I'll go see if I can find the examples! WEE!
Thankis!

One major problem with Windlight is that while it won't break existing content it'll make things that are inherently based on how they look like walls, furniture, hair, etc... made from prims look like crap unless your really lucky or unless the designer has been designing them with windlight in mind.

My walls look fine...maybe its cause I used windlight while building.. but my last build looked just fine too.. and the one before that..

I don't think windlight really hurts ANY textures unless they have lighting baked onto them to begin with (Which I find silly but hey, to each their own right?)

It only makes things too bright if the thing had some part made as if lit already anyway it would seem...

unfortunately, many of the higer quality low prim objects that use complex textures to make up for the lack of prims, require baking shadows and hilights... and can be thouroughly trashed in windlight... that new happy medium is gonna be hard to find.

I've wondered this as well, to an extent, as I've wanted to make a sundial that uses the SL sun. Not sure if its even possible, really.

Sorry Oki, but washout in Windlight is really there. Bright textures lose all details. They look fine at noon (default settings) in the regular viewer, but are overexposed a lot at noon (default) in Windlight. See attached pictures and Jira http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3710 (hmm Jira seems to be down at the moment)

Ah at noon.. I don't count that, since there are still admittedly problems with noon lighting in windlight. I use my own custom day cycle, so I never see it.

Perhaps I'll do that 'sky presets pack' thing that Torley mentioned in one of his blog posts/tutorials, and pass around my sky settings. Looks good (I personally find the default settings a little bland as a whole) and deals with washout.

ETA:: I kinda like the washed out chairs lol.. seems almost matrix-y XD

Been playing with this a bit myself, the day and night thing is easy, but adding say sunrise or sunset or even more is the sticky part. From my limited understanding the sun vector isn't precise, and it is a normalized vector, which I think keeps one from using it to break down the parts of the day.

I have a friend playing with a work around, but it's not my idea to discuss, and I am trying to think up something simpler anyways.
