Ok. What's with this?
I've created a <0.5,0.5,0.5> sized object that is TempOnRez, Physical, Phantom, and scripted to ApplyImpulse <0,0.1,0> on rez. So basically the object appears, and starts moving north at a very slow pace.
Thing is, the object seems to spontaneously wink in and out of existence. Not as if it were being removed from TempOnRez, but as if the object were 0.01 in size and a fair distance away, culling it from my renderer until I get closer. It DOES wink BACK into existence if I get close enough, usually, but not always.
How do I get these objects to exert more influence on viewer's renderers?

Link them with an invisible prim larger than the smaller one.
It is caused by something similar to LOD; the client wont render anything too small to be noticable from a distance for framerate reasons.

I've seen this as well from my Matrix gun - at a certain distance the bullets stop rendering, but the noticeable particle effects also stop rendering since they are from a script in the bullet.
The WEIRD thing is that even if I follow the bullets (which move very slowly in Matrix mode) - they still stop rendering at a certain time - like frozen in midair.
Then if I walk into the "phantom" frozen bullets, it will begin to render again to where the bullet actually is.
I know the bullets are not jumping because they will always hit on target...
I should bug Dan or Kelly about this.

Hrm. Yes, you and I both, Hiro.
Making these objects 10x10x10 isn't that great of an option.

This isn't LOD... I'ts LOI, Level of Interest. Small things far away aren't as important as big things or things close to you, so they may get culled (removed from the screen). Personally, I think things that are moving should remain "interesting" as long as they are in motion. If it doesn't spoil anything, you can set your object to be a light so that it does remain interesting no matter how far away it gets.

Sweet, thanks! And just to clarify, these objects that were winking in and out of existence couldn't have been more than 10m away from me. That's GOT to be close enough for "importance".

Ok. Setting them to Light doesn't help. Blah. Grr. *stabstabstab*
EDIT: And even weirder, they'll just as randomly appear and disappear at a distance.
